Abstract: International designer and architect Ettore Sottsass has designed just seven homes in his storied career, one of which is for sale. Even better, it is located on the lush island of Maui in Kula, Hawaii.

This jaw-dropping property is a colourful geometric marvel.

"It's actually a very famous house and a world-renowned property designed by a very famous architect from Italy," says Dean Otto, listing agent with Keller Williams Realty Maui." It is one of the most famous properties, definitely the most famous property in the state of Hawaii, if not one of the most famous architectural masterpieces in the country."

The 2,470 square foot home was built in 1997 and is listed for $4.5 million. In addition to its groundbreaking design, the property offers ocean and mountain views and sits on half an acre.

Sottsass has designed only two residences in the United States. His other sculptural design is located in Woodside, California.

Known for his bold colours, he has also designed furniture, home furnishings and iconic innovations, including a typewriter for Olivetti.

"Every part of that house is a work of art," says Otto." Everywhere you look, there is something designed by Sottsass."

In fact, the architect even designed the home's bespoke furniture, tableware, silverware and lamps.

His fingerprints are all over the exterior, too.

He actually came over during the construction of the house and designed the landscaping and selected the plants," explains Otto.

The furniture could have been sold separately, but Otto notes that the seller wanted the buyer to have the option to purchase them.

"There's no way I could see it being separated - it belongs together," Otto insists." This is a museum piece. It is a work of art. There is no point in taking out its interior design. It would be a tragedy if all the interiors were not considered at the time of purchase."

According to the listing agent, the whimsical house, which has three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, was built by Sottsass because he had an existing relationship with the owner.

Otto said they sold the house to renovate it and live in a single-storey house on a nearby plot of land.

Sottsass died in 2007 at the age of 90. He founded the Memphis Group, an Italian architecture and design collective with a post-modern and collaborative spirit. Most of the group's designs have clashing colours and bold designs.

The same can be said of this house, which has received worldwide attention.

"It was on the cover of Dwell [magazine] and appeared in every major publication and every museum related to models and design," says Otto." It's been published everywhere. No property has received as much acclaim as this one. It's very unique to be able to represent a property like this."

He believes the perfect buyer will value everything this house represents.

"If you're an art collector or someone who really appreciates art, design and style, there's no other house for you," says Otto.
